Magic Mushrooms – Good With Garlic
Sant Sadurni de l’Heura
By Regina Winkle-Bryan
Who knew people could get so excited about fungus? A. and I were roaming around Girona, a couple hours north of Barcelona, and on one of those winding country roads pulled past a Mushroom Festival in Sant Sadurní de l´Heura. Of course we had to stop and check out the fungi.
There was fungus for sale, baskets for collecting it (mushroom caches are highly coveted, and placed in wicker baskets once plucked), fungi being cooked up on the BBQ, stuffed in sausages, and mixed into an enormous ‘paella’ dish (Spanish rice). We bought some ‘rovellons’, a tasty Catalan mushroom, and cooked them later that night with garlic and Italian parsley. Yum.
You can buy mushrooms seasonally all over Catalunya from October to late November. If you’re not up to heading to the countryside, search out the fungus among us at most Barcelona restaurants and any Barcelona market, such as the famous Boqueria.
