Originally from southern Turkey, for centuries Garra Rufa, have been known for softening and cleansing the skin of people who bathed in hot springs where the fish thrived.
So what does the Garra rufa fish do? These fish basically nibble on areas of dry skin, especially around heels and soles of the feet and finger nails. For psoriasis or eczema sufferers, the fish target the plaques — areas of sore, red and thickened skin. These fish produce a natural process that is similar to exfoliation by schooling together and concentrating on the areas of the skin which are in most need of treatment. Using this technique of nibbling and sucking, the Garra Rufa is able to gently peel the layer of dead skin from the foot but leaves the under layer of healthy skin untouched. During this process it is said that the fish secrete an enzyme that helps with the healing process and rejuvenation of the skin.
